Foul Shooting IS Important

Coach Calipari was right in the press conference about how bad Memphis had to play and how good Kansas had to play for Kansas to win the title.

One thing that is Calapari is wrong is about the importance of foul shooting. If you play street ball or jungle ball, you know what the most important shot is ? Foul shooting because where I used to play back in the Big Apple, the first six guys in a pick up game usually hit the free throw so they play. Forget about getting in line for a 3 on 3 if there are 6 guys ahead of you. We usually had to sprint to the foul line or you would have to wait 2-3 games to play. I normally would not get picked on a team in a pick-up because I was not the tallest (5' 10") kid nor the biggest kid. Besides that, I did not know anyone on the court and they never saw me play. Remember, we are talking about the first game in a gym or school yard. You were lucky to touch the ball 2-3 times in practice with all the people on the court

The other thing about foul shooting or playing basketball is to see who is playing and playing well in the last 5 minutes. It does not matter much - usually - what you do before that. When the game is on the line in the last 5 minutes, who is playing well ? That is your ball game most of the time. Kansas played better during the last few minutes of this game and then in OT. National title to Kansas.

Foul Shooting IS Important

I just want to say that you cant blame a coach for trying to relax his team by saying free throws arent that important and they can win without them. But unfortunatly for Memphis they did lose because of the free throws at the end of regulation. You could see there mistakes while they were at the line. thats not bad coaching thats nerves.

Foul Shooting IS Important

I agree Cubansajoke. Calapari was only trying to relax his team. I think the truth about foul shooting would have been better for the Memphis. Can you imagine a business class where a professor would tell business majors that their public speaking, grammar and speech in general don't make a difference in a candidate getting hired ? Don't worry, when they see your GPA is 4.0 from Wharton Business School you will be fine. (? - being sarcastic) Most times, you are as only good as your weakest link.

Foul Shooting IS Important

Calipari did not deserve to win

he said free throws weren't important

his team shot them like they weren't important

and they lost

hmmmm

they looked pretty damn important to me last night or his guys wouldn't have been choking

I mean if they aren't important why were your players under so much pressure shooting them???

and the "relaxing his players stuff"

CDR didn't look to relaxed shooting those free throws

looked pretty nervous if you ask me

Foul Shooting IS Important

Hi 24K. Thanks for the post. I think Cubansajoke and I were saying the same thing. Cuban was just rationalizing or explaining the thought process from Calapari.

Foul Shooting IS Important

Props to d2w for representing San Diego and Bo (he knows), however, I believe free throws are important and should be stressed more by coaches (along with other fundamentals), and as the game clearly showed - if you can't make them, you may very well lose.  I do agree that Kansas overtook the momentum and outplayed Memphis in OT.  No disrespect to KU, but Memphis lost this game more than Kansas won it.
